School Garden Programs
At Dig In, we believe that every school everywhere should have a garden! It is only in the past two centuries of human history since industrialization and globalization that we have become so fundamentally disconnected from our food system and local ecology.
As today’s youth navigate this increasingly technologically driven world, it is imperative that students develop joyful, curious, and empowered relationships with food and the natural world from a young age by engaging with school gardens.
School gardens are dynamic outdoor learning environments that are known to effectively ground science standards, but also allow plentiful opportunities to bring history and social science, math, language literacy, and arts concepts into tangible, memorable experiences.
At Dig In, we help school districts implement garden programs by:
- Designing engaging gardens that feed students, attract wildlife, create beauty, and serve as outdoor learning stations
- Building gardens with the help of students, school staff, and families
- Maintaining gardens during the school year and coordinating garden maintenance over summer break
- Developing garden program curriculum in collaboration with teachers, curriculum specialists, and school administrators
- Facilitating scheduled garden lessons during spring and fall
- Facilitating classroom cooking lessons during the winter months
